How to Source Outdoor LED Lighting for Your Project
Learn how to choose LED street lights, floodlights and solar outdoor lighting for B2B projects. Compare lumens, efficacy, IP ratings, drivers and suppliers.
Outdoor lighting is an important category in B2B LED purchasing. Street lights and floodlights are often used for long hours in demanding outdoor conditions, and project orders can involve hundreds or even thousands of units. When something goes wrong, the cost goes far beyond the price of the fixture. Poor product selection can lead to higher energy consumption, premature failures, warranty issues, and delays for the whole project.
Before sending an RFQ, it helps to know which specifications really matter and how to compare different suppliers. This guide covers the key points to check when sourcing street lights, floodlights and solar outdoor lighting, as well as what to look for when evaluating a manufacturer. The examples are based on Enshine Lighting's outdoor lighting products and our experience as an LED manufacturer in Xiamen, China, with around 20 years of OEM and ODM experience.nce.
1. Five parameters to understand before you source
When comparing outdoor lighting quotes, don't look at the unit price and wattage alone. These five specifications give you a much better idea of what you are actually buying and how the fixture will perform.orm.
Wattage (W) — the power consumed by the fixture. It is useful for comparing energy consumption, but it does not tell you how much light the fixture actually produces.
Luminous efficacy (lm/W) — the amount of light produced for each watt of power. A higher lm/W generally means better energy efficiency. Our street lights, for example, reach around 120 lm/W, while our high-bay lights can reach 150–160 lm/W.
Total lumens (lm) — the actual light output of the fixture. For lighting projects, this is usually more useful than wattage alone when determining whether a fixture can provide enough light for the application.
IP rating — the level of protection against dust and water. IP65 is commonly used for outdoor applications, while IP66 provides a higher level of protection where fixtures are exposed to heavier water or dust.
Driver and lifetime — the driver is one of the key components affecting fixture reliability and service life. We use Philips drivers on many of our street lights and floodlights, combined with aluminum housings and thermal designs intended to manage heat effectively. Always ask what driver is used and what conditions the claimed 50,000-hour lifetime is based on.
If a supplier's quotation only shows the wattage and price, ask for the complete specifications before making a decision. Two fixtures with the same wattage can have very different lumen output, components and expected service life.ife.
2. Street lights vs. floodlights: which one fits your site?
The two categories solve different problems, and buying the wrong one is a common mistake.
Street lights are designed for roadways, municipal streets, parking lots, and industrial zones. They have a controlled beam that spreads light along the road surface without blinding drivers. Our 100W–300W street light uses a Philips driver, delivers around 120 lm/W, and is built for highway and municipal applications. For higher mounting heights, the IP65 high-power street light is rated for 8–10 m poles with a 5–15° beam angle.
Floodlights throw a wide, even wash of light over open areas — building facades, billboards, sports grounds, parking lots, construction sites, and ports. Our YX-FL-05 floodlight series covers 100W to 400W with a Philips driver and die-cast aluminum housing, and the IP66 1000W floodlight is built for stadiums, warehouses, ports, and large outdoor projects.
Ask yourself: do you need to light a long corridor of road, or a wide open area? That single question usually points you to the right family.
3. Solar vs. grid-powered: when does solar make sense?
Solar outdoor lighting is worth a serious look when running power lines to the site is expensive or impractical — remote roads, rural villages, parks, and off-grid installations. It also cuts ongoing electricity cost.
Two architectures exist. All-in-one solar street lights integrate the panel, battery, and fixture in a single unit. Our all-in-one solar street light uses photocell control plus microwave radar sensing: it runs at full power when a vehicle or pedestrian approaches and dims the rest of the time to save energy.
Split solar systems separate the panel from the fixture, which often allows a larger panel and battery. Our split solar streetlight uses an A+ solar panel with over 21.3% conversion efficiency and a LiFePO4 battery with 95% depth of discharge and a 6–8 year life. For floodlight applications, the IP65 solar floodlight (200W–400W) uses a monocrystalline panel and LiFePO4 battery and can run through 2–3 consecutive cloudy days.
Solar is not always the answer — in high-latitude, low-sunlight regions or where grid power is already cheap and reliable, grid-powered fixtures often win on upfront cost. Match the technology to the site, not to the trend.
4. How to judge whether a supplier is reliable
For a project-scale purchase, you are really buying the manufacturer's ability to deliver consistent quality, not just a box of lights. A few signals separate a real factory from a trading company:any:
Manufacturing history. A supplier with years of focused production is more likely to have stable processes. Enshine has been making LED lighting in Xiamen for around 20 years.
OEM/ODM capability. If you need your own branding, custom wattage, or tailored specs, ask whether the factory does OEM and ODM. Enshine builds OEM and ODM solutions for global B2B customers.
Component choices. Ask which driver and LED chips are used. Named components like Philips drivers are a concrete signal of build quality.
Warranty and after-sales. A clear warranty (many of our fixtures carry 2–5 year terms) and a supplier who will stand behind a project order matter more than the lowest unit price.
You can also check how a factory talks about quality. A supplier that explains its inspection process and materials in concrete terms is usually more transparent than one that only promises "high quality."ty."#34;
5. Common sourcing mistakes and a quick checklist
These are the pitfalls we see most often in outdoor lighting procurement:
Buying on wattage alone. Two 200W fixtures can differ hugely in actual light output and lifetime.
Ignoring the driver. A cheap driver fails early and takes the whole fixture down with it.
Under-specifying IP rating. For exposed outdoor sites, IP65 is the floor; go IP66 where water and dust are severe.
Choosing solar without checking sunlight. Solar only pays off where the site gets enough sun.
Not confirming OEM/ODM and warranty terms before ordering. Get these in writing.
Before you send an RFQ, have your lighting design (or your supplier) confirm: required lumens, mounting height, beam angle, IP rating, driver preference, and whether the site is grid or solar. That list alone will save you from most bad purchases.
6. Getting a project-specific solution
